The Power of Mind-Muscle Connection in Bodybuilding: How Does it Impact Your Gains?

The mind-muscle connection is the ability to focus tension on a particular muscle or muscle group during an exercise to make it contract. This emanates from the neuromuscular junction, a section of the brain where the mind meets the body. Obtaining a strong mind-muscle connection requires a level of concentration throughout your workout and is scarcely possible if the performer’s mind is consumed by other things going on in his life. Stress and anxiety may be a detriment to the muscle-mind connection as the brain expends energy to overcome the stressful and anxious feelings, rather than fully concentrating on the exercise being performed at the gym. The key to the muscle-mind connection is to minimise distractions. We are surrounded by distractions which make it difficult to maintain an adequate level of concentration. Most people are constantly using their phone during training. This is not an ideal practice. Each time a notification comes in, you lose focus and become restless until you are able to determine the nature of the notification. This partly due to the instant gratification world we live in today, in which individuals seek instant validation and gratification through the virtual world.
